Charitable Getting: Draft Two Index Post

This is the second-draft index post for Charitable Getting.

Charitable Getting: A Novel Deduction

Philanthropy in the twenty-first century is a game. Artists, salesmen, executives, and idealists are the players in the game. The goal is to get something for nothing, and pass it on without the donors passing judgment.

At the center of the game board stands the charismatic Bo Sparks, executive director of SparkVISION Consulting. Along with his highly motivated and slightly neurotic staff, Sparks masterminds the offensive for the charities under his care, from instructional webinars to grassroots organizing, ad campaigns to catering. Surrounded by the wealthy and the desperate, he just wants to do a little good in the world.

Journalist Tanya Montray has a different goal: she thinks SparkVISION is harboring a secret, the identity of the mysterious blogger Non Prophet. An anonymous authority with a dry wit that has earned him the dubious title of "Internet Celebrity," Non may hold the key to SparkVISION's triumph over their foes -- but if Montray manages to uncover him, he might also be their downfall.

Sex scandals, embezzlement, internet gossip, clandestine love affairs, and one misplaced cake -- it's all in a day's work, in the charitable sector.

So, I kind of screwed up the chapter structure when I laid all this out, and I realised that some of what went into chapter four should have gone into chapter three, really. So I'm posting this as the "end of chapter three" plus Chapter Four. Sorry about that!

Uh...so while I was supposed to be writing Valet of Anize, I wrote a different novel instead.

This happens sometimes.

This is the index post for Charitable Getting, which I'm going to be posting here for the next month or so. I do intend to return to VoA, but hey, sometimes you have to follow the muse.

ABOUT THE NOVELS

This is the home of three completed novels, one work in progress, and one completed novel in the process of being edited:

The Dead Isle: Jack Baker is an engineer in a world where magic is an everyday occurrence. Clare Fields is an expatriate from a country that has no contact with the outside world. Ellis Graveworthy is a famous novelist and a spy. Purva de la Fitte is a pirate princess with a sensible soul. Join them in a steampunk adventure spanning three continents in search of the answer to the puzzle of Australia -- The Dead Isle. The Dead Isle is currently in rewrite; a second draft will be posted in late April and early May, 2012.

Trace: now available in hardcopy, epub, and free download, is the story of Colin Byrne: pickpocket, artist, and occasional consultant for the police. He’s also an ex-felon, an initiate into the feral, unspoken magic that only prisoners know: how to vanish, how to tell fortunes, how to steal souls. Now the man who put him in prison wants him to return to Railburg State Correctional Facility to help investigate a case. But with mysterious forces aiming to incite a riot that will wipe Railburg from the map and from human memory, Colin has bigger problems than the one he went to Railburg to solve...

Charitable Getting: Now available for hardcopy purchase or free download on lulu.com. When philanthropy is a high-stakes game for donor dollars, Bo Sparks can set you right. During one holiday season in Chicago, Sparks and the staff of SparkVISION Consulting will weather sex scandals, lawsuits, snowstorms, and one investigative journalist bent on discovering if one of them is Non Prophet, a successful anonymous blogger with a following of thousands.

Nameless: Now available for hardcopy purchase on lulu.com. Nameless tells the story of Christopher, a city boy turned country-bookseller, and the friendship he forges with a shy artist named Lucas when he accidentally sells him the wrong book.

The Valet of Anize: the story of a young servant hired to be the personal valet, bodyguard, and secretary to a wealthy engineer. Together, Valet and Dr. Anizin are determined to unravel the mystery of the Silence, a cataclysmic event a hundred and fifty years ago, which cut off the planet of Arrival from the rest of humankind. This novel is incomplete.
